Kavai is a Senior Research Scientist working at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, with 10 years of work experience in epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of foodborne pathogens, such as E. coli, Salmonella, Vibrio, and Shigella. She have been involved in over 10 projects focusing on the isolation and characterisation of enteric pathogens. In particular, she have a keen interest in phylogenetic and evolutionary characterisation of Salmonella Typhi strains from urban informal settlements in Nairobi County, Kenya. Findings revealed that alternative methods to antibiotic therapy, such as mass vaccination of the Typhoid conjugate vaccine should be explored.
