Title : Prevalence of risky sexual behavior and contributing factors to the increase of sexually transmitted infections among adolescents in bogor city and regency
Abstract:
Background: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are increasing among adolescents. Economic conditions, lifestyle choices, and feelings of fear and shame to seek medical care are major barriers to early prevention and treatment
Methods: A descriptive quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 50 adolescents aged 14–18 years in Bogor City and Regency, selected randomly. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and short interviews covering sexual behavior, economic factors, lifestyle, and access to reproductive health services.
Results: A total of 95% of respondents reported being sexually active without condom use and frequently changing partners. Low economic status and a free lifestyle contributed to high-risk sexual behaviors. The majority (87%) admitted feeling afraid and ashamed to seek reproductive health services, increasing the likelihood of undiagnosed and untreated STIs.
Conclusion: Risky sexual behavior among adolescents in Bogor City and Regency is highly prevalent. Economic factors, lifestyle, and psychosocial barriers are key determinants of STI vulnerability. Comprehensive sexual education, youth-friendly health services, and stigma reduction strategies are urgently needed to reduce STI incidence in this age group.
