Abstract:

Climate change is reshaping the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases by altering vector survival, seasonal activity, geographic distribution, and interactions among ticks, wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. Warmer temperatures, milder winters, prolonged vegetation periods, and changing humidity patterns can increase tick abundance, extend questing seasons, and facilitate northward and altitudinal expansion into previously unsuitable regions. These ecological changes are contributing to the emergence and wider recognition of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, spotted fever rickettsioses, tick-borne encephalitis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and other infections. Expanding populations of IxodesAmblyommaDermacentorHyalomma, and Haemaphysalis species also increase the likelihood of pathogen co-circulation, coinfection, and novel clinical syndromes, including alpha-gal syndrome associated with Lone Star tick exposure. Land-use change, wildlife migration, urban expansion, travel, and occupational or recreational exposure further amplify risk. Effective preparedness requires climate-informed surveillance, improved clinician awareness, timely laboratory diagnosis, prompt empiric treatment when indicated, public education, personal protection, and coordinated One Health strategies integrating human, animal, and environmental health. Addressing climate-driven tick expansion is therefore essential to reducing the growing global burden of tick-borne disease.

Biography:

Dr. Yazdan Mirzanejad is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a staff physician in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at Surrey Memorial Hospital. With more than 28 years of experience, he has dedicated his career to clinical care, medical education, and mentorship in infectious diseases and tropical medicine. Since 2014, he has served as Site Lead for the ambulatory teaching curriculum at UBC’s Surrey Campus, supporting undergraduate and postgraduate education, learner development, and faculty mentorship.

His academic interests include tropical medicine, antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, severe infections and sepsis, emerging pathogens, and the health impacts of climate change through a One Health perspective. His research has contributed to studies on septic shock, diabetic foot infections, Lyme carditis, Cryptococcus gattii, extensively drug-resistant Salmonella Typhi, and national antimicrobial surveillance initiatives. Recognized repeatedly for excellence in clinical teaching, Dr. Mirzanejad integrates clinical reasoning, microbiology, public health, and global medicine into his educational approach, emphasizing patient-centred care, practical decision-making, and collaboration across diverse healthcare settings.
